Greetings,

Have you noticed how every conversation now begins with asking about how you faired during Harvey? It’s not just a mindless conversation starter. People are genuinely interested and want to hear your story and the answers vary. Some experienced being evacuated to a shelter and their house and car being flooded. Others were just stuck on an island for a few days but home and car are just fine. Others experienced something in between. Everyone’s lives were touched in some way by Harvey and it was reassuring to see and hear all the stories of people helping people and coming together.

We were fortunate living in The Heights. We were just stuck at home for a few days. We had power, food and water but no cable or internet because the Basenji pack decided that cable must be tasty and chose that time to chew it in two. Our Basenji’s are the three bark-less African dogs that make our lives more interesting. They fared quite well outside in their dog house except for Sunday night when they got scared or lonely and insisted on coming inside. We gave them baths and let them sleep in the bed with us. Talk about your Three Dog Night! Our Tibetan spaniel who is our inside dog chose to sleep under the bed. Monday night our street was waist deep in water and it came up to the front steps but then went back down. The September magazines rode out the storm in the warehouse and were high and dry the whole time. Our delivery team got them out to businesses around town as soon as the streets were passable.

As I have driven around Houston, it is still shocking to see the ruined furniture, appliances and dry wall piled at the curb in some neighborhoods and know what that must mean for the people who live there. Almost a month post-Harvey, there is still a lot of work to be done. People keep saying but it is true, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Even though there is still a lot to be done, occasionally, take some time out to rest, recharge, renew. Get a massage. Take a walk in the park. Go out to eat at some place you have never been before. Reconnect with someone you haven’t talked to in a while and tell them that you love them.
